KINGS OF MACEDON. Antigonos II Gonatas, 277/6-239 BC. Tetradrachm (Subaeratus, 29 mm, 12.24 g, 3 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Amphipolis or Pella. Irregular mint, after 239. Horned head of Pan to left, wearing goat skin around his neck and with lagobolon behind; all within the center of a Macedonian shield adorned with stars and crescents. Rev. BAΣ[IΛEΩΣ] - AИTIΓOИOΥ Athena Alkidemos striding left, holding shield with her left hand and brandishing a thunderbolt in her right; to left, facing Macedonian helmet with transverse crest. Cf. HGC 3.1, 1042 and Panagopoulou pl. 55, 3-4 (for prototype). Breaks in plating, otherwise, very fine.
